Private Training School For Health Personnel

CBC Private Training School for Health Personnel, Banso (PTSHP)

Historical Background

With the creation of the CBCHS in 1949, there was an increasing need for quality and God fearing staff as the years passed by. Therefore the PTSHP was created in 1955 with the aim of training staff based on biblical standards so they will effectively articulate the CBCHS mission statement. The school started as a Grade II Midwifery School and today is training health personnel from all over Cameroon and beyond. In September 1963, the first class of Grade 1 Midwives completed their final examinations and in June 1966, the first group of nurses completed their 3½-year course.
In 1971, training was changed to the Breveté level in accordance with Decree No. 71/DF 414 of 26 August 1971, Section V, Transitional Provisions Article 42. In 1974, a third year of training for Breveté Midwife (Breveté Accoucheur) was begun. In September 1976, training for Nurse Aide (Aide Soignant) was begun.   In 1985, Aide Soignant Laboratory Option was introduced.
In 1981, the name of the School was changed from Banso Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery to the Cameroon Baptist Convention Private School of Nursing and Midwifery. In 1985, the name was changed to Cameroon Baptist Convention Private School of Nursing and Midwifery and was recognized as an examination centre D120/L/MSP/SG/DS/DAS/SFP/BF of 08/03/85.

In order to reflect accurately the diversity of educational programmes that are held through the auspices of the School, the name was changed to the Cameroon Baptist Convention Private Training School for Health Personnel - Banso in 1990. The school partners with the Government, Lutherants and Mambilla Baptist Convention (in Nigeria) in training health personnel. As at 2012, the school had graduated over 2000 health personnel with majority of them absorbed into the CBCHS as permanent staff. Plans are that higher courses like Midwifery and State Registered Nursing be added to the school while government accreditation is sought for all other courses. A project to construct a modern structure for the institution was started in 2008 and is estimated to cost 150 million FCFA. The new block will accommodate lecture halls, offices, staff rooms, multipurpose hall, library and demonstration rooms.
